NCM and Music Network proudly present sensational German lyric baritone Benjamin Appl in a romantically-coloured programme for voice and piano. Selected as part of the European Concert Hall Organisation’s Rising Stars programme, and a current BBC New Generation Artist, Appl has captivated audiences across Europe and America with his smooth-timbred voice, expressive delivery and physically-charged performances.
“The voice: big, round, perfectly controlled. Musicality, charisma, stage presence: everything present.” DIE NEUE
“Benjamin Appl had the appropriate bearing and vocal authority for the role of Aeneas.” THE GUARDIAN
“Matthewman’s keyboard accompaniments… came across like a musical cardiograph, tracing the fluctuations of mood and feeling with pinpoint accuracy. The prelude and postlude to each song were invariably scene-stealers.” FINANCIAL TIMES
The last-ever student of the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Appl was awarded the prestigious Schubert Prize by the Deutsche Schubert-Gesellschaf in 2012, and this season he returns to the Schubertiade, London’s Wigmore Hall and deSingel in Antwerp among other venues. Appl has also performed in recital at the Rheingau and Oxford Lieder festivals and the KlavierFestival Ruhr.
For this tour, he is accompanied by Gary Matthewman, one of the UK's leading song pianists whose former recital partners include such luminaries as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Thomas Allen, Mark Padmore, Ailyn Perèz and Roderick Williams. Together, they will perform Labours of the Heart, a programme of Lieder and operatic arias.
The programme will include arias from popular Mozart operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute, as well as arias from Lehár’s The Merry Widow and Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Well known songs by Mendelssohn, Poulenc and Schubert will also be performed in this truly unmissable concert.
